Once Right Now Just Then
Once Right Now Just Then is a performance that explores presence, the passing of time and the nature of grieving and expectation. The audience will be greeted with text that reminds us that things only happen once as the performer rests midstream of the Mill Creek.
A lot is happening. A lot has happened in the last year. We built things. My mom passed away. Anchors moved. Continents shifted. Relationships are ending, evolving, beginning. It’s been year of collaborations, congratulations and condolences. There are storms coming and a sea of water under the bridge. Somewhere between being on the top of the world and consumed by heartache, sometimes we just have to sit. Like staring into a fire, the sound of passing water reminds us of a constant shifting. I’m going to put up a reminder that good or bad, this, now, is only once, and then I’m going to sit and listen. Join me if you feel like it.
Randall Okita is a Canadian artist and filmmaker whose work often employs sculpture, physically challenging performances or stunt-work, and rich cinematography. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Randall has lived and worked in Japan, Vancouver and Toronto. His artworks have been shown in both group and solo exhibition, and his films have been broadcast on television and screened at festivals around the world. His short film The Weatherman and the Shadowboxer is a blend of live action and animation produced by the National Film Board of Canada, and was awarded best Canadian Short Film at the Toronto International Film Festival and Best Experimental Film at NY Shorts Fest among other awards.
